5 books to read this fall according to Ryan Wieser

1. The Pact by Jodi Picoult

Fair warning: The Pact is a very controversial book. Originally published in 1998, it details the events that lead up to a suicide pact and ultimate death of seventeen-year-old Emily. If you look up The Pact on Goodreads, you will see the book has a 4-star average from over 240,000 ratings, but you’ll also find quite a few angry reviews. Anyone with a Netflix account or access to the news knows that suicide has been a spotlighted topic recently. Picoult tackles a heavy topic with the writing ability of a well-seasoned author, ensuring an intricately woven story for many to appreciate.

2. The World According to Garp by John Irving

I love this book but it’s simply quite bizarre. What is The World According to Garp about? We follow the life of the character TS Garp, writer son of a feminist icon. Filled with peculiar characters, odd plot developments, and an array of themes, this is a book that I find instantly absorbing, as the plot is equal parts odd and intriguing. I’ve read this book three times. I still cannot firmly say what it is or isn’t about, but it is one of the most masterfully written eccentric tales I’ve ever read.

3. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I read Jane Eyre when I was quite young, and odd as it may seem, this is the first book that ever frightened me. Not in a red-balloon It kind of way, but still, I was spooked while reading certain pages. You’ll know the scene when you reach it. Creepiness can only be achieved through expert storytelling, and this book was expertly crafted. Jane Eyre explores themes of religion, independence, and love, and the role of women in society. This is not the easiest or quickest read on my list (we are in the 500 page region here) so some may wonder if it’s worth the time and commitment. Short answer? Absolutely.

4. Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse

I’ve always loved Siddhartha. I’ve read this a handful of times throughout the years and I appreciate that it’s very accessible to many different readers, despite covering some potentially complex notions on life, love, and spirituality. Thanks to the simplicity of the structure, this is a fairly quick read, but I bet that you may just find yourself returning back to the pages to revisit the central themes or to consider the story’s message.

5. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

A fantastic book! Like Siddhartha, The Alchemist also possesses a simple, accessible structure while presenting some serious considerations on happiness, dreams and goals, and the purpose of life. Depending on the kind of person you are, you’ll either love or hate the ending but it’s all part of the ultimate message.

Let me know what you end up reading this Fall!

Zyan Star Series: An Urban #Fantasy #Series by A. A. Chamberlynn

Martinis with the Devil
Zyan Star Series Book 1
by A. A. Chamberlynn

Genre: Urban Fantasy

When offered a job on the Holy Representative’s special security team,
bounty hunter Zyan Star couldn’t be less interested – until she
finds out it’s her most hated of exes that they’re trying to
track down. He broke her heart and dumped her, which in turn led to
the loss of her soul at the hands of an immortal soul thief. Now she
too exists on a diet of souls, with the occasional martini thrown in
for good measure, and she’s had over two hundred years to fantasize
about revenge. She just didn’t quite imagine it playing out
alongside the emissaries of Heaven.

Working with Eli, the uptight angel that heads up the HR’s security, is
just about as much fun as Zy expects. He of course wants her vampire
ex brought to justice through legal avenues, which is very
inconvenient and incredibly boring. As she dives into the case,
however, she realizes there’s more at stake than her plot for
payback. Like, the free will of mankind, and preventing the minions
of hell from taking over the sovereign dimensions.

This job is going to push her to the limits of her abilities, and there’s
just a slight problem with that: the powers she’s suppressed for
centuries after losing control of them are exactly the powers she’s
going to need to save the HR, end her millennia-old ex and stop
Lucifer’s little plot to join the party and invade Earth.

Savior of humanity? Not so much. Or so she thought.

Whiskey and Angelfire
Zyan Star Series Book 2

Can Zyan avert the war that’s brewing before her past catches up to
her, quite literally?

When one of the angelic warriors goes missing, Zyan and Eli head off to
Dublin to join the search. As soon as they arrive, they're swept into
rising tensions between the angelic forces and the other supernatural
races. As more supernaturals go missing, Archangel Michael will stop
at nothing to put the perpetrator behind bars, even if it means
placing the city under martial law.

To add to the mess, Zyan's sister Anna is in Dublin, and where Anna is,
Lucifer is only a step behind. Not to mention Alexander, Zyan's sworn
enemy. Zyan has more than a sneaking suspicion they’re at the heart
of a spree of recent demon invasions. But something is odd about
these demons, and if she doesn’t figure it out before Lucifer
reveals his ultimate plan, the price could be catastrophic.

As if things couldn’t get worse, being back in Ireland where she was
turned immortal has dredged up the worst from her past. Including her
maker, Olga, who’s none too pleased that Zyan’s come back.

Vengeance and Vermouth
Zyan Star Series Book 3

Book three in the Amazon bestselling Zyan Star urban fantasy series!

To bring her best friend back from the dead, Zyan will march into Hell
itself. But first she needs to amass a force that can challenge
Lucifer on his home turf.

With Archangel Michael and the forces of Heaven on her heels, Zyan
criss-crosses the globe, gathering a supernatural team of epic
proportions. She’s calling in all her favors this time, summoning
figures from her past both dangerous and deadly.

And to get into Hell she must work with the worst of them all, the one
who murdered her friend in the first place. Zy will have to put aside
her burning need for revenge to pull off the biggest mission of her
life, but that may prove to be the one thing she can’t do.

Zyan Star if it were a movie/TV series

As a writer, I’d love nothing more than to see my books turned into movies or an extended series on Netflix, Prime, or the like. My Zyan Star series would probably be the best to translate to film: fun futuristic settings, steamy romance, epic fight scenes, and everyone’s fave supernatural beings, but with a twist.

For casting, I always picture Olivia Wilde playing Zyan Star and Travis Fimmel playing Eli (back when he did modeling and wasn’t all grunged out). For Donovan, Gerard Butler, and for Alexander, Henry Cavill. I have various pics for Quinn, Riley, and some of the other characters on my Zyan Pinterest board.

For music, I built the following playlist/soundtrack for Martinis with the Devil:

Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Antidote (Swedish House Mafia)
Titanium (David Guetta, Sia)
Promises (Nero, Skrillex)

It would be so fun to see the series translated to film. Hey, a girl can dream, right?

Alexia is the author of the Amazon bestselling Zyan Star urban fantasy
series and The Timekeeper's War contemporary fantasy series. She
lives in Florida with her son, two cats, and a bearded dragon. When
she's not writing or reading, she can be found playing with horses,
drinking wine, traveling to the next place on her global wish list,
or maybe doing yoga. Dr. Who, unicorns, and katanas make her very
happy. She is represented by Sandy Lu of the L. Perkins Agency.

The Black Trillium: A #PostApocalyptic #Fantasy by Simon McNeil

The Black Trillium
by Simon McNeil

Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy

Confederation rules in Trana—so says the king.

But Fredericton is a long way from the shores of Lake Ontario, and
schemes for power will bring together three extraordinary young warriors.

A desert girl who came to Trana looking for refuge but has never found
a home

A privileged city boy dreaming of rebellion and hardened by cruelty

The disgraced heir to the throne desperate to win back his place in his
father's heart

Sworn enemies or reluctant allies, they all have one thing in common: an
incomplete half of the legendary fighting skill known as the
Triumvirate sword art. They fight for glory, for power, for the
monsters lurking beneath the streets, and for the mysterious society
moving in the shadows of Trana—the Black Trillium.

Later that day I was tending the fire in the kitchen hearth. Uncle Stephen came back in from his deck. His lips were almost blue from the cold but whatever he’d been speaking to his friend about had been clearly more important than his comfort.

“Kieran, I’ve spoken to Jean. He told me what happened, with Sawchuk.”

“You aren’t mad, are you?”

“No, I understand.”

“Well good, because I didn’t mean to attract his attention, it’s just…”

“He suspects me. And not entirely without reason; surely you have suspected.”

I gave my uncle a skeptical look.

“You know the stories about the fall of Quebec and the freedom fighters who opposed MacMillan’s father.”

“The Black Trillium,” I said.

“And I’m sure you have heard that some of them survived. Well…” He paused and he looked at me steadily. “Jean and I both fight for the Black Trillium. We have since we were young. In Jean’s case he was at the fall of Quebec.”

The fall of Quebec. It was one of those moments of infamy you heard about in hushed rumour, almost legend already, though not yet in the distant past. That Mr. Chamblais might have actually been there was shocking. I sat still for a moment, trying to control my surprise and awe before I spoke.

“And now something has happened.”

“In Broken Tower. The lordling there killed a Confederation minister as an offering to us, seeking allegiance. We turned him down. We weren’t ready to free Trana and he’s forced our hand. Things are going to be very hard in the next year. War is coming to Trana. So you have a choice to make.”

“A choice…” I could hardly believe what he was telling me. It made sense. My uncle’s strange friends, his opposition to Confederation, Sawchuk’s suspicions, all these things fit the pattern of a rebel in hiding.

“Yes, you can fight with us. If you do you will have to do… terrible things. War is always terrible. But you can. Or Jean can bring you to safety somewhere nearby.”

“What about you?”

“I have to stay here. It’s my home. I’ll fight to defend it.”

“So will I,” I said.

“Be careful Kieran, I never wanted to draw you into a war.”

“No. But if I start running now, when will I stop?”

“If you are sure,” he said.

And I was.

“Yes,” I said, and I looked up at uncle Stephen burning with fierce pride.

“So why were you fighting with Argus Sawchuk?”

“I was talking with Teddy Li about the situation, you know, down in Broken Tower and he came around, accused me of treason.”

“The situation is fragile, we must be careful not to alert the wrong people clashing with lumps like Sawchuk.”

The stranger slipped into the room then and said, “The situation is beyond fragile. It is devolving and there will be war soon.”

Uncle Stephen seemed to deflate a little, his shoulders sagging. He took a deep breath. “I know that, Jean. But I’d prefer it didn’t start on my doorstep.”

“The truth is that we must deal with Sawchuk.”

I had a fantasy of drumming the bully out of Kensington, tarring him and feathering him, anything to see him gone.

“Let’s go now!”

“You’ll stay put today.” Uncle Stephen sounded firm.

“No, your uncle is right. Sawchuk won’t readily forget you were the reason he was beaten today. He’ll be on the lookout for you as soon as he recovers and the chances are good he won’t be alone. You stay put, for today. Tomorrow we will see to your education.”

“Yes, sir,” I said. “I understand.” I thought calling him sir would be appropriately respectful, but he just chuckled at me.

“Mr. Chamblais will suffice,” he said.

“If you don’t mind me asking, Mr. Chamblais, what do you mean you’ll see to my education? I already know my numbers and letters.”

“There is much a rebel must know beyond reading and writing. I don’t suppose you know how to handle a sword.”

I’d never thought of it that way. I’d played at swords with my friends when I was a kid but Kensington was a peaceful place. I hadn’t ever learned to fight.

“But first you must be initiated.”

“Initiated,” I said. “Some sort of ceremony?”

“Something like that.”

The rest of the day passed slowly. I stayed inside while uncle Stephen and Mr. Chamblais “dealt with the Sawchuk problem” and the weather was miserable in any case. I felt almost resentful, like I wasn’t getting to join a romantic brotherhood of freedom fighters, but was instead being made a prisoner in my own home by a strange raggedy man.

I went to sleep reluctantly, my head buzzing with thoughts of heroism and rebellion, excited and terrified about what lay before me.

Simon McNeil is the
author of The Black Trillium, a story of revolution and martial arts

The Secrets of Hawthorne House: A #Paranormal #Mystery by Donald Firesmith

The Secrets of Hawthorne House
by Donald Firesmith

Genre: Teen Paranormal Mystery

Fifteen-year-old Matt Mitchell was having the worst summer imaginable. Matt’s misery
started when a drunk driver killed his mother. Then Matt’s father
moved him and his sister to a small town in rural Indiana, as far as
his grieving father could get from the ocean that his mother had
loved. At the new high school, three bullies were determined to make
Matt miserable. And to top it off, Matt learned that the recluse who
lived in the dilapidated Victorian mansion next door was none other
than Old Lady Hawthorne, the town’s infamous witch and murderer.
Matt’s terrible summer was turning into an awful autumn when
something quite unexpected happened. Old Lady Hawthorne’s niece and
her three children moved in next door, and Matt met Gerallt.

A geek by day, Donald Firesmith works as a system and software engineer
helping the US Government acquire large, complex software-intensive
systems. In this guise, he has authored seven technical books,
written numerous software- and system-related articles and papers,
and spoken at more conferences than he can possibly remember. He's
also proud to have been named a Distinguished Engineer by the
Association of Computing Machinery, although his pride is tempered
somewhat by his fear that the term "distinguished" makes
him sound like a graybeard academic rather than an active engineer
whose beard is still slightly more red than gray.

By night and on weekends, his alter ego writes modern paranormal
fantasy, apocalyptic science fiction, action and adventure novels and
relaxes by handcrafting magic wands from various magical woods and
mystical gemstones. His first foray into fiction is the book Magical
Wands: A Cornucopia of Wand Lore written under the pen name Wolfrick
Ignatius Feuerschmied. He lives in Crafton, Pennsylvania with his
wife Becky, and his son Dane, and varying numbers of dogs, cats, and birds.

Almost Human: A #Paranormal #Fantasy #Series by Melanie Nowak

**ALMOST HUMAN is a series of successive trilogies, not stand-alone books.
Each trilogy is self-contained enough to be read alone as a 3 book
set, but the story unfolds chronologically, and the characters do
continue from one trilogy to the next. Main storyline closure is in
each 3rd book, but there are also story-ties leading from one trilogy
to the next in the series.

Fatal Infatuation
Almost Human- The First Trilogy, Volume 1
by Melanie Nowak

Genre: Paranormal Romantic Urban Fantasy

Shy Felicity never expected to gain the attention of a handsome man...or
a vampire, but she’ll need all the help she can get to navigate
difficulties of addiction and desire; perils of zombies and vampires;
and struggles with abuse, morality

Cain is an elder vampire who displays quiet confidence even as he
struggles to overcome sins of his past. Surprisingly, he found that
in losing his life he gained his faith and a purpose. His mission:
find the hostile vampires that inhabit this small college town, and
educate them to live in peace with humans. Their leader, Sindy, is a
wicked temptress who has set her sights on Felicity's new friend Ben.
She will be difficult to control, but after meeting Felicity, Cain's
most difficult task lies in controlling himself.

Lost Reflections
Almost Human – The First Trilogy, Volume 2

Felicity has helped her friends to escape the venomous vixen Sindy, but cannot
divine the motives of Cain, the vampire who captured first her
gratitude, and then her heart.

She finds the historical
account of Cain’s past enthralling and frightening. Now she must
determine whether the addictive venom in Cain’s kiss is clouding
her judgment, and if his thirst for her blood is a driving force too
strong for their love to conquer.

It’s difficult to
contemplate such questions while under the attack of a vengeful
vampire and his zombie slaves. Felicity’s heart has already been
lost to Cain; will she lose her life as well?

Evolving Ecstasy
Almost Human – The First Trilogy, Volume 3

The relationship between Cain and Felicity has crested to a peak that
leaves them unsure whether to step back from each other for safety,
or jump into a future united in death.

Felicity is unlike any human Cain has known before. She treats him as an
equal; a man worthy of friendship, respect and even… love. She
embodies qualities of gentleness and loving trust that he has never
found among his own kind. This makes her far more desirable to him
than any creature of darkness could ever be.

The venom of Cain’s bite could protect Felicity from hostile vampires,
but it would give him a measure of psychic control over her as well.
Would Felicity only accept becoming a vampire, due to his addictive
venom, coupled with the foolishness of a young girl in love?

Perhaps there is a brighter future for her in the human world. Is Cain’s
desire for Felicity’s love worth the loss of her life?

Born To Blood
Almost Human – The Second Trilogy, Volume 1

Alyson used to think that vampires were almost human; that is, until she
became one. Finally consenting to be lovingly turned by her boyfriend
Mattie, Allie has come to possess traits and powers previously
unknown among vampire kind. Now Allie seeks the help of the elder
vampire Cain, to discover not only what she is capable of, but why.

Still healing from heartbreak over Cain, Felicity looked forward to a nice,
human relationship, but dating the son of a vampire hunter, and
having a psychic bond with one of his prey makes life far from
normal. How can Ben and Felicity discover the truths of love when
they are forced to live with so many secrets?

Someone has contrived a diabolical plan to control destiny, and blood may not
only be the catalyst for change, but also the master of manipulation
behind it. Is rebirth as a vampire always at the discretion of an
undead sire, or sometimes is one simply born to blood?

Descendant of Darkness
Almost Human – The Second Trilogy, Volume 2

The saga continues...

Heartbroken and soul searching, the vampire Cain believes he has finally found
his purpose. He is mentoring Allie, who is grudgingly coming to terms
with the fact that she is unique among vampires... The United One.
Together with Allie's husband Mattie, they are working to discover
her powers, when the vampiress Sindy returns with some new tricks of
her own.

Ben and Felicity have tried to leave their past involvements with
vampires behind them, settling into human life together, despite
having to deal with Ben's vampire hunting father - but is mundane
love strong enough to supersede the supernatural?

The vampire Elric has sabotaged his master's plans to control The United
One more times than for which he can expect to safely escape the
consequences. Coven Master Arif knows what he wants, and the guiding
forces behind his plan know how to help him get it... If Elric
rebels, he could lose his love, but thwart disaster for the human
race. Is staying true to the coven in order to save his love, worth
the price the world will pay?

When you are descended from darkness, is it still possible to reach for
the light? In times of peace, prepare for war.

Destined For Divinity
Almost Human – The Second Trilogy, Volume 3

Sindy is a vampiress of little morals and large aspirations...or at least,
the old Sindy was. Love and friendship are becoming more important to
her, and after becoming an accomplice to kidnapping and an agent of
betrayal, she would be willing to settle for escaping the tangled web
she has woven without getting herself dusted.

Felicity is being held for a ransom that no one of sound moral conscience
should be willing to pay. Coven Master Arif, a vampire whose
terrifying talent of mind-control holds her more tightly than chains,
wants control of The United One; Alyson. A vampire of great power
unlike any other, Alyson is a good friend to Felicity and a dear
covenmate of...

Cain, a vampire who declared his love for Felicity, but left her to fulfill
her dreams of having a human family. Since renouncing his vampiric
tendencies, Cain’s existence has been one of self-sacrifice and
benevolence. To rescue Felicity, he would have to betray Alyson and
endanger the world, an act that would torture his conscience for eternity.

Perhaps Felicity’s husband Ben can rescue her, but to ensure Felicity’s
safety he would have to play by Arif’s rules. Is Ben willing to
make a deal with the devil to retrieve his wife? Or should he put his
differences aside to try and work with Cain, his former rival, to
find a solution? Cain may be able to help rescue Felicity, but is he
willing to give her up...again?

Alyson has never been one to meekly follow others. Is it time for The United
One to take a stand of her own? Her blood dictates that her divine
destiny is to rule vampire-kind. Maybe it is time to lay down some
rules! A battle is sure to ensue...can Alyson protect everyone she loves?

Will Felicity survive Arif’s wrath to keep her life...and her humanity,
or when all is said and done, will she find herself ALMOST HUMAN?

Melanie Nowak is author of the venomous vampire series ALMOST HUMAN, and a
happily married mom of 2 boys. She holds a Master's Degree in Library
and Information Science, and lives with her family on a peaceful
mountaintop in the forest of upstate New York. She has always had a
vivid imagination and a fascination for the paranormal. Acting and
singing are loves of hers as well. However, upon conceiving the idea
for her ALMOST HUMAN series in 2003, she discovered a previously
unknown passion for writing! Now she puts her over-active imagination
to good use, creating characters she loves, and she gets to play all
of the parts!
