“Who are you?” she asked softly as she tentatively slipped the shirt over her head.

“My name is Auren. What’s yours?”

“Sirah.”

“When was the last time you had something to eat, Sirah?”

She shrugged, staring at the floor.

I called out to the guard to have food brought up. Sirah was surprised when he did what he was told without question.

“Are you the delohi-saqu?”

I pressed my lips together, considering how best to answer her question. It didn’t take long to decide honesty would be best. “Yes.”

She gasped and took a step back.

Thalia kept walking, ignoring him.

“Thalia, please.”

She whipped herself around to face him. “And how do I know you’re not here as a spy and to impede my efforts.”

Derock was offended at first, but then he realized after his behavior, she had no reason to trust his intentions. “You’re right. You have no way of knowing.”

She began walking again and Derock followed.

“I’m still going with you.”

“Do whatever you want, Derock. Just don’t expect me to follow your orders or treat you with deference. I’m done being subservient to men.”

“Fine. We’re equals then.”

Thalia snorted.

“You don’t think I can treat you as an equal?”

“Loldiran men have placed themselves so high on their pedestals, I’m not sure any of you can see the ground anymore.”

“Why is there a woman here?”

Kolt shuddered as the god’s booming voice resonated within every cell of his body. “Lord, I am not aware of the presence of any woman. We forbid them from entering this part of the stronghold.”

“Yet, one hides there.”

Kolt raised his head to see where Loldir was gesturing. The god was a formidable site. He loomed above them, nearly touching the twenty-foot ceiling. His upper torso and head, while still bathed in flame was more corporeal than his lower body, which seemed to meld with the flame. His face was more beast-like than man. Loldir’s outstretched arm pointed toward the tapestry along the back wall.

“Show yourself, woman,” Loldir said, making the room shake.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Saturday Sneak Peek, but that’s probably because I haven’t written much in a while. Thanks to NaNoWriMo, I’m on a writing spree…

I’m working on the first book in my A God’s Deception series, so I’m going to give you a little sneak peek of that. Keep in mind, these sneak peeks are totally unedited versions, so it could change in the final version of the book. But at least it gives you a taste of what’s to come!

“I really miss the old executions,” he said. “I was disappointed when the council changed to a more humane method of execution, labeling the old ones archaic and unnecessary. I’ve always believed if someone committed a crime, they deserved whatever punishment they received.”

He’d go on like that for hours, describing every detail of the execution she faced. It wasn’t as simple as being dunked in scalding water. They were going to slowly pour small buckets of boiling water over her until she died. After each bucket was dumped they’d wait for her cries to die down before doing the next.

“Eventually, your skin will seem to just melt off your body, but even then you won’t die right away. The torment can go on for hours or even days before you die. The best part is everyone in the city will be lined up to take their turn in dumping the scalding water over your body.” He ran his hand down her body as he said this.

Aedar joined us, frowning, but he kept his thoughts to himself.

"This will definitely make our work easier. Now we can focus on those that will be likely to join us. We risk exposing ourselves every time we approach someone. There are some who would be more than happy to turn us in just for the opportunity to be given more privileges," Asher said.

I nodded. "They may need a little push though."

"What do you mean?"

"These people are still afraid, but I can help quell their fear. At least while you speak with them. Once they are out of my sphere of influence, it's up to them. But I can also make sure I only lead you to people who would not dream of turning you in for self-gain."

Aedar folded his arms over his chest. "And how will you do that?"

“Why would the shadow people care about us?” Aedar asked.

“Why wouldn’t they? They are our grandparents and parents. They are our family who have passed on. Why wouldn’t they want us to live in peace?”

He didn’t have an answer for that
.
“The shadow stalkers were created by the shadow people thousands of years ago to protect humanity and ensure our survival. We are on the verge of extinction. I here to make sure that doesn’t happen. Plain and simple. Drevin has built this nation on a lie. Are you ready to fight and free yourselves from that lie?”

“Yes,” they say together.

I stepped back to let Asher take over again.

“Do you really think we can win a fight with so few people?” he asked.

“No. We’ll need more.”

“We’ve been trying, but they’re just too afraid.”

I nodded. I had felt their fear firsthand. “I know, but I think I can help with that.”

Makari stirred the contents of the pot that held our evening meal. “Now is probably not the best time for exploring.”

“No. I know. I was just thinking that maybe one of these tunnels might lead to the camp.”

“They might, but we have no idea which ones, and we’re more likely to get lost.”

I was only partially listening to them. One of the tunnels seemed to stand out more than the others. It seemed brighter even though I knew it couldn’t have been. And voices whispered in my mind as if encouraging me to go there. “I can find the way, but it will take several hours of hiking.”

“You’ve been in these mountains?” Makari asked.

“Well, Kado and I did come up here a few times, but not this mountain specifically. We went further north.” I sighed. Now was just as good a time as any to tell him. “My powers have returned. I drank the water from the Black Lake and after that something happened. I can access the shadow world again, but it’s different now. Everything feels different.”

“Different how?”

I shook my head. “I can’t explain it.”

I'm a bit behind at the moment. Episode 20 of my Shadow Stalker serial should have been out last week, but because of a viral infection taking over our house, that didn't happen. In fact, I'm still writing it, but it will be ready to go by next week.

We had already been hiking through these tunnels for over two hours. There was no way I was going to go back now. "We'll make due."

I stopped at the bottom of the incline.

Makari seemed stunned. "How are you doing this?"

"I have no idea. It's as though something is guiding me."

"I hope it's someone who actually wants to help and not someone who wants to get us lost or killed," Jade said.

"Trust me." I knew there was nothing malevolent about our guide. It was likely the shadow people. "I'll go first, then Jade and Makari. Makari, you'll have to help Jade with the climb."

He nodded.

I imaged he had already guessed as much. Thank goodness the tunnels through here were narrow. The walls had enough jagged edges to easily use as footholds for the climb. I stayed just ahead of Jade letting her know where to place her feet, while Makari helped her with leverage and making sure she didn't lose her footing. It was slow going.

Some jagged edges were loose, so I was being extra careful, but when the rock shifted I lost my balance and slid down the incline.

I released my newest short story this week, so I wanted to give you a sneak peek:

There was no sound. Jillian was sure she outran them this time. She was smart though. Too smart to move this early and give up her location. The last time she did that, they nearly got her. She crouched in the shadows of a dumpster and waited. About twenty minutes passed before she dared to move, and even then it was only to move further into the alley where she could eat in peace.

“All this for a box of cereal,” Jillian whispered to herself. She squeezed through the small opening in the boarded up doorway of the abandoned building she called home. After climbing to the second floor, she barricaded herself in a small room that she was sure had once been an office. Probably where the boss sat in his cushy chair while the people worked their butts off in the sweat shop below.

After opening the box, she shoved handful after handful of cereal into her mouth until she couldn’t swallow another bite. Leaning back she sighed. It had been days since she had a full belly.

Jillian didn’t realize she had started dozing until a noise woke her. She wasn’t alone in the building. She heard the soft clang of boots on the metal stairway. She was trapped. She hid behind some boxes and old furniture that had been left behind just in time for someone to force their way through her barricade. She froze. For a moment there was no sound.

“I know you’re here,” a male’s voice called out.

Rylee picked up her phone and dialed.

“911. What is your emergency,” an eerily familiar male voice said.

“I'm bleeding really badly, and I can't make it stop.”

“Just go to sleep Rylee. You'll be fine in the morning.”

Rylee hung up feeling calmer. He was right. She was overreacting. It was a long strange day. She just needed some sleep. Her pillow was a welcome sight, and after resting her head, she closed her eyes and began dozing. Then she quickly sat up.

She never told the man her name.

I've finally finished writing Episode 19. I ended up changing the ending to the Shadow Stalker serial, so I had to do a lot of re-planning. But I'm happy with it now. :-D

Tamir tensed next to me. I held my hand up to stall whatever he was planning. I didn't need this turning into a fight, especially in front of Jade. Physically she was healing well, but her mind was still fragile.

“If I go with you—“

“If?” Kado arched an eyebrow.

“’If’ I go with you, we have to take Jade as well, and you have to promise me you'll return her to Deakan on Appolia before we return to the Dark Isle.”

"It's not possible, Auren. You can give birth any day now. Makari will keep Jade safe for the time being.”

Jade grabbed tightly onto my arm.

I stood my ground. “I won't leave without her.”

Rylee had been feeling as though she had woken in an alternate reality lately. People walked the streets like zombies, with their blank, emotionless expressions. Every morning she followed the same routine, and nothing seemed to change.

"Good morning," she said to a passerby.

The woman looked at her as though she was trying to figure out if someone had actually spoken to her, then walked off.

"People are so rude," Rylee said under her breath.

She lifted her pastry to take another bite. Even the food hadn't been the same. Almost tasteless. She couldn't even seem to smell anything. Had the world always been this way, and she didn't notice? She hoped she wasn't getting sick. Just as the pastry touched her lips, someone grabbed her arm and pulled her into the alleyway.

Rylee opened her mouth to scream, but a gloved hand muffled the sound.

“Be quiet. There are listeners everywhere. You're in danger, but I'm here to help,” a woman said.

Rylee turned to face the woman as soon as she released her. “Danger? What do you mean? Wait! What's a listener? Who are you?”

Auren tried to turn and run, but she couldn't make herself move. The demon was right behind her now. It roared loudly, then Auren felt something slam into her back knocking her to the ground. She was somehow out of the shadow world, but so was the demon. She jumped to her feet to run, but the demon was too quick. It raked its huge claw across her back. She heard the tearing of her clothing and skin moments before the pain hit. The demon stood over her as she lay face down in the dirt, screaming. Just when she thought it would land a killing blow, it bellowed out another roar and ran off, kicking her a few meters with its foot.

"Damn it, Auren. What have you done?" Kado said, kneeling beside her.

She had no idea where he came from. He stood and appeared to be considering going after the demon. The thought of being left alone terrified her. The demon tore her back open, and she didn't know how badly she was bleeding. If he left her, she might die before he could get back. She wasn't even sure if there was anything he could do for her.

"Kado, please," she cried when he took a few steps away from her.
