About the Book

Your blood does not define you.
Harley Torrance’s parents were killed in a home invasion when she was three. Adopted by a nice couple, Harley begins to develop strange powers. At fourteen she brews a potion so strong it gains the attention of the Coven King, and changes her world forever.
She’s not human, she’s a witch.
Now a part of the magical community, Harley must learn to control her powers lest the Darkness already in her blood overcomes her. Can she dampen her lust for power in order to stop the Dark from taking over the Coven and killing everyone in their way?

Keep reading for an interview with Harley Torrance, a character from the book:

Where were you born, and what was it like growing up there?
I was born in Liverpool, England. It was so dull! I constantly wished to be whisked away to a more interesting place. … I suppose I got my wish, didn’t I, when the Coven King and came and swept me away to Scotland.
Do you have a close relationship with your family?
My birth parents died when I was a baby, and I was raised by a nice adoptive couple. My abilities scare them sometimes, to be honest. I think they now sort of regret picking me from that orphanage.
Who is your enemy?
I have a personal enemy and a REAL enemy. The personal enemy is Alicia Gordon, a fellow witch who came from an all-human family dating back to the early sixteenth century. I’m still not sure why she hates me, but she does.
There is also The Company of Clan Munro, who is the enemy of the entire Coven. They want to eliminate magical apprentices and make magicians rule over all other creatures, and humans, too.
Who do you most admire in your world?
Salem Sinclair. He’s a Coven Elder and one of the only people who gives straight answers in this place. Most of the other kids my age dislike him because he has a tendency to be caustic and brusque, but to me, he’s the most intelligent, interesting person. I hope that when I’m an adult I can be half the magician he is.
Tell us a little about your world, and where you fit in?
My world is a little hidden Coven in northern Scotland. We are the centre of the United Kingdoms and Ireland’s Coven, and therefore our leader, the King, resides here. Every country, sometimes every state in the US, have their own faction, all connected together by an organization I’m not entirely sure is on the up-and-up.
I live with a family called the Quigleys along with their three kids and two other wards who came from broken homes such as I. I attend school at the Coven, learning both mortal and magical skills (I still have to do maths, ugh) such as potion-making and magical medicine.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned about life?
I learned that good and evil aren’t necessarily polar opposites. As someone with both Dark and Light blood in my veins, I know I am capable of great devastation, but I have chosen Light.
Others, too, who have Dark blood chose the path of goodness, and there are some, like little Roger Ainsley’s mother, who was born to the Light and became evil.
You can’t judge someone by their birth. You have to judge them by their actions.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life?
Mr. Sinclair, by far. When I got to the Coven, I was angry and confused, especially upon getting some startling information about my birth father. It was Mr. Sinclair who helped me figure out that I’m not evil, and that I don’t have to follow the path my parents set for me. He taught me how to be the best version of myself.
Have you ever been in love?
I am in love, with a boy named James Quigley. I live with his family, as I mentioned before, and James and his twin, Greta, are my age. I think I fell in love with him from the moment we met if I can be so sappy. I think he’s delusional for liking ME of all people, but as long as he doesn’t wake up and realize he’s pledged himself to the creepy Goth with Dark blood, I’m quite content.
What kind of clothing do you prefer to wear?
We’re allowed to wear whatever we want, but there are more traditional robes and cloaks we can wear. I prefer a plain black velvet cloak over a black dress. Black is my personal favorite color, and I am rarely seen in anything else. I often admire the cloaks the Elders wear, with their delicate embroidery depicting their skills and accomplishments.
What is your favorite food?
We have a cafe that serves the strangest ice cream and frappes. So you can get these weird flavors like earthworm, or you can get vanilla. I personally love the espresso bean, dark chocolate, and pixie dust flavor, in a pumpkin-flavored cone.
What was the most exciting adventure you’ve ever been on?
Well, I am not sure if it’s exciting or insane, but I went to the leader of The Company’s house to rescue someone he kidnapped, only bringing along two other kids. I won’t spoil anything, but it didn’t end well and was one of my less successful ideas.
